BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE LUBLIN PRESS 1800—1939

“Bibliography of the Lublin Press 1800—1939” includes titles of newspapers published in Lublin and in the administrative area centering around Lublin, taking into account the territorial changes which took place during the period discussed.
The basic territorial changes in the former Lublin District, later Lublin Guberniya (province), took place in 1845 after the abolishment of the Podlaska Guberniya, with its capital in Siedlce, and the annexation of a large part of its area. However, it did not last long because on January 1, 1867, the Siedlce Guberniya was created again including the folowing districts of the Lublin Guberniya: Siedlce, Biała Podlaska, Radzyń and Łuków. In 1912, after the next abolishment of the Siedlce Guberniya, the above districts were again included in the Lublin Guberniya. In the same year, however, on the basis of a bili of Czar's Parliament, the Chełm region was separated from the Lublin Guberniya. Anyway, this was only a legal division, made on a political-religious basis. Actually "Chełmszczyzna" was never really separated. That is the reason why the "Bibliography" does not take into account that "separation" and it includes titles of newspapers appearing in the "isolated" area in the period of time in question.

From 1919 there was a new administrative and territorial division in the Republic of Poland and the newly established Lublin Voivodeship lasted, with small changes, till the beginning of the Second World War.
The "Bibliography" includes titles of newspapers directed both to Poles and to minorities. Entries, about which there is no first-hand information, are marked with and asterisk, specifying the source of information about a given title. In cases where a newspaper's circulation can be established, its minimal and maximal values are given. Dailies, appearing in that period of time, are deliberately excluded from the "Bibliography".

The "Bibliography" does not describe the entire production of newspapers of Lublin and its voivodeship in the period discussed, chiefly because of the incompleteness of annual sets of particular newspapers or because of their total lack; it concerns especially leftist newspapers, illegal publications and press published in foreign languages. Intensive studies in the history of the Lublin press which have been undertaken recently will certainly help to enrich this list adding many a new title and may confirm the opinion that Lublin and its voivodeship constituted one of the larger centers of press in Poland.
